New England land speculators first arrived in Ozaukee County in 1835, followed by German, Irish, and Luxembourger immigrants. Originally home to Native American tribes including the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Sauk, the word “Ozaukee” is the Ojibwe name for the Sauk people and roughly translates to “people living at the mouth of the river.”
Ozaukee County is the second-smallest county by land area in Wisconsin. About two-thirds of the county’s jurisdiction covers Lake Michigan. Ozaukee County boasted the second-lowest poverty rate of any county in the U.S. as of the 2000 Census and ranked as the 25th-wealthiest county based on per capita income. With a large collection of art galleries and studios, many houses listed on the National Register of HIstoric Places, and one of the last covered bridges in Wisconsin, the county offers a great blend of culture and history.
