VINYL SIDING QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q: What is vinyl siding?

A: Vinyl siding is an exterior covering for buildings that is used for decoration and protection. Vinyl is an alternative to aluminum siding, wood siding, and fiber cement siding. Vinyl siding is the most popular type of siding in the United States.

Primarily composed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl siding comes in many different colors and textures. Its decorative versatility, relative durability and low maintenance make it a popular choice for American homeowners.

Q: How long does vinyl siding last? Is vinyl siding weather resistant?

A: One of the reasons that vinyl siding is so popular is because it is quite durable. A typical warranty for vinyl siding may range from 20 to 40 years (depending on the manufacturer and thickness of the siding). Vinyl siding is also weathers weather very well because it is resistant to cold, moisture, heat and high winds.

Q: What maintenance does vinyl siding need?

A: Milwaukee Vinyl siding requires little to no maintenance because it never needs to be painted, is resistant to UV light damage, and doesn’t nick the way wood siding does. For the most part, the only maintenance that vinyl siding needs is a yearly washing and repair when damaged.

Q: Is vinyl siding expensive? How much does vinyl siding cost?

A: For those who want an affordable way to redo their home’s exterior, vinyl siding is a good option. It is the least expensive type of siding available, and, because it requires so little maintenance and lasts so long, it usually ends up being a smart long-term investment in the value of a home.

Q: What are the differences between the different vinyl siding thicknesses?

A: Vinyl siding comes in a wide range of thicknesses, from roughly .035” to .052” thick. In general, the thinner the siding, the less expensive it is, the less durable it is, and the less time it can be expected to last. The thinnest vinyl siding that is still commonly used is .040” thick, and it is known as “builder’s grade” siding.

Q: How thick should the vinyl siding on my home be?

A: We recommend using vinyl siding that is at least .044” thick, and we never recommend any vinyl siding that is less than .042” for residential homes. Older homes, which are more susceptible to settling and shifting, should use a higher grade (“thicker”) siding because the extra thickness helps hide those issues.
