Once home to Indigenous tribes like the Monomonie, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk, Waukesha County was formed in 1846 when a portion of Milwaukee County was split off. The name was derived from the Potawatomi word for “fox” because streams in the county flow into the Fox River.
Waukesha County was settled by New Englanders heading west in search of new homesteads. These “Yankees” built farms, roads, and buildings, and brought along their Puritan values, which focused on education, religion, and abolitionism. Today, it is the third-most populous county in Wisconsin. Waukesha County is situated 15 miles west of Milwaukee and boasts abundant recreational opportunities such as fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, biking, camping, and golf.
